Rest Home Care

Written by Ryman Healthcare | Aug 12, 2024

At Ryman we offer a range of care options, including rest home care. Rest home residents receive the very best in clinical care, while enjoying the benefits of living in our friendly community.

To make sure you receive the level of care that’s right for you, your needs are assessed before you arrive. We then create an individual care plan that is specific to your needs. This will determine the level of care you require, and includes your own personal preferences right down to how you like your cup of tea.

We can assist you with anything from showering and assistance with dressing, to administering medicines – it depends on whatever your needs are at that time. With this extra help, daily life carries on as normal.

A regular selection of activities and outings are there for you to enjoy, and we encourage you to make the most of the amenities that the care centre offers.

Ryman residential care centres are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A clinical manager and unit co-ordinators oversee our trained carers and registered nurses. Our staff ratios are amongst the highest in the retirement sector and where possible, you will be regularly cared for by the same person.

Rest assured that at all times you will be treated with the utmost dignity, kindness, and respect.

Care options vary between villages, please check with your local village.

Wondering how to get into a rest home in NZ?

Everyone is responsible for paying for their own care, but people can apply for a Residential Care Subsidy if they can’t afford all or some of the cost. The first step is for you to be assessed by your local Needs Assessment and Service Coordination agency (NASC). Or in some regions, assessment is done through Care Co-ordination – Older Person’s Health.

To find your local NASC visit www.nznasca.co.nz/regions

Or call Seniorline on 0800 725 463

If you have been assessed as needing long-term residential care, you may be able to get a Residential Care Subsidy to help with the cost of your care. It's paid directly to us by Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora.

Whether you receive government assistance will depend on your income and assets when you need to go into care. To determine your ability to contribute to your care costs, Work and Income NZ will conduct a financial means assessment.

How to apply for a Residential Care Subsidy

If your money is tied up in your house, you may be able to get a Residential Care Loan to help pay for your care if you don’t qualify for a Residential Care Subsidy.

A Residential Care Loan is an agreement with the Crown to provide a loan for the cost of your care. It's an interest-free loan secured by placing a caveat over your home, which is paid directly to us. It's usually repaid to the Crown when you pass away or when your home is sold, whichever happens first.

Residential care questions and answers

The cost of care can vary, depending on what your needs are, which region you are living in and the type of accommodation you choose. Because rest home care fees are set by Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, all care centres within a region will charge the same amount for a standard room.

If you require a higher level of care, such as hospital or dementia care, the Needs Assessment and Service Coordination agency (NASC) will conduct an assessment to determine what care you need.

Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora will pay the difference between what you are contributing (the assessed amount or maximum contribution for rest home care) and the contract price for the higher level of care. Your local village manager will be able to explain this in more detail.

When you move into a Ryman care centre, the specific costs associated with your care will be outlined in an Admission Agreement. These will be comprised of two costs:

This is set annually by Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and covers the cost of your daily clinical nursing care, meals, housekeeping and activities.

This is a premium paid for accommodation that is superior to a standard room. Specifications that require an accommodation premium can include but not be limited to: a private room, spacious room size, private ensuite and room aspect. Room layouts vary, so for more information, please check with your local village.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with smiling faces, warmth, and kindness. We know that moving can be unsettling, so we take time and listen to you. Our staff will be on hand to help with whatever you need, and you’ll have the security of monitored call bells in your room and ensuite.

At Ryman village, our care rooms are spacious, overlooking beautifully landscaped gardens, courtyards, or atriums and include a private ensuite* and television, with plenty of space for family and friends to visit.

You are welcome to personalise your room with your own furnishings such as your favourite armchair and special belongings.

We also offer rest home care in the comfort of an assisted-living apartment. This allows you to remain in your Ryman apartment, but with the extra support that you need.

Your care plan will come to life through our custom-made electronic care app, myRyman Care. This enables nurses and carers to access and record care tasks and clinical data for you at your bedside. This means less time writing up notes, and more quality time caring for you. And should your primary carer be absent, everything is securely recorded, making the transfer of care seamless.

Our residents look forward to mealtimes because the food tastes great – and it’s nutritious. Our Delicious menu offers flavoursome meals prepared fresh on site by our village chefs.

As a residential rest home care resident, we will provide all your meals and snacks. You will have a choice of three main courses, including a vegetarian option. Plus, we cater for special dietary requirements – just talk to us about what you need.
