Looking at all the care options in a retirement village? Respite care or carer support for day care provide the perfect opportunity to experience and explore our range of care options before making a decision.
Respite care is a great short break option for a family member or loved one that also helps give carers some time out to recharge the batteries. There are a range of circumstances which might require respite overnight or support for day care.
It could be needed after a hospital stay or just as a little extra support for caregivers. Respite care ranges from a few days and even up to a few weeks. A loved one, who lives in their own home, will have their short respite stay in one of our village centres.
At Ryman Healthcare, we have care centres in our villages where a loved one or family member who are living in their own home can come and stay for anything from a day up to several weeks. When they come to stay with us in care, they have meals provided, all the support they need and they take part in activities offered at the village.
So how do you get respite care or carer support day care? A family member or loved one going into respite care will first need to be assessed by a local Needs Assessment Co-ordination Agency (NASC). Once an agency representative from your region has visited and made their assessment, a decision is made on whether the person needing care is eligible for care services and the appropriate level of government assistance. Find out more in our handy step-by-step guide to care.
Our villages offer a range of care options including rest home, and in most villages, hospital, and specialist dementia care, as well as respite care. We also offer respite stays in assisted living serviced apartments.

Plus, there’s peace of mind that a loved one or family member will be looked after round the clock as we have call bells that are monitored 24/7. Part of our respite care includes the myRyman Care app. It’s this technology on multiple devices in the care centres that enable nurses and carers to access and record daily care tasks and clinical data. This means a resident’s information is updated and available in real time making transfer of care seamless.
This Ryman innovation is what sets us apart from our competitors. In 2019 myRyman care was named Innovation of the Year – Care Model at the Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards.
If you have a loved one or family member who has been injured in an accident then they may be eligible for a stay in respite to give the caregiver a break through an Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) claim. However, before looking into which Ryman Village you’d like a loved one or family member to stay in, and if you think they are covered by ACC we would recommend you contact your local Needs Assessment Co-ordination Agency (NASC) first. They will make the necessary assessment first before you consider costs and how they are covered.
