Each Ryman village is named in honour of a Kiwi or Aussie trailblazer: Anthony Wilding, Lady Diana Isaac, Evelyn Page. They pushed further and set the bar high for others to aspire to. In creating communities that challenge the expectations of ageing, Ryman villages are also setting the bar high. They’re demonstrating that a retirement lifestyle brimming with new experiences, connections and fulfilment is something we should aspire to. Our Kiwi and Aussie namesakes represent the measure of inspiration, while Ryman villages represent the measure of retirement living.
Sir Richard Hadlee is widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers and allrounders in the history of cricket. He was knighted for services to cricket in 1990 while still playing the game. Sir Donald Bradman once described him as “The Master of rhythm and swing” due to his ability to swing and seam the ball with deadly and efficient accuracy.
He was born into a cricketing family in 1951. His father Walter captained the successful New Zealand cricket team on their tour to England in 1949 and brothers Barry and Dayle also represented their country.
During Richard’s career he came the first bowler in history to capture 400 test wickets. He ended up with 431 wickets and scored over 3000 runs. He held world records for most five-wicket bags in an innings (36 times) and ten wickets in a match (9 times) and currently holds the world record for most five-wicket bags against another test country (14 times verses Australia).
His greatest bowling achievement was taking 15 wickets in a match against Australia at ‘The Gabba’, Brisbane in 1985-6. That included 9 for 52 in the first innings and during the series took 33 wickets to help New Zealand secure their first ever test and series win in Australia 2/0.
He played for Canterbury, Tasmania, Nottinghamshire and New Zealand capturing 1490 wickets at an average of 18.11 including 102 five wicket bags and he had a highest score 210*.
During his career he received many accolades. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009 and the New Zealand Cricket Hall of Fame in 2024. He was New Zealand Sportsperson of the year in 1980 and 1986, Sportsman of the year in 1987, Sportsperson of the Decade in 1989 and Sportsperson of the last 25 years in 1987 shared with John Walker.
After retirement he was a New Zealand cricket selector including being Chairman and Selection Manager. He served on the Board of New Zealand Cricket for four years.
Now fully retired he enjoys a quiet life watching many other sporting codes.
