This was the right decision for me - it's perfect!

Even though Jenny had a friend living at Charles Fleming Retirement Village in Waikanae, she didn’t think she would ever move there herself. But a series of unexpected events caused her to reconsider that decision.
Living in Christchurch during the earthquakes was a worrying time for her. After experiencing the liquefaction on her property once again, she decided it was time to move north

Next, some health concerns troubled her, so when the opportunity of a townhouse came along, she jumped at the chance with an enthusiastic ‘yes please I’ll have it,’ reply.
Jenny spent one year in the townhouse before her move to the serviced apartment. “It’s wonderful,” she smiles.
Her independence is important to her and she counts herself lucky to have family nearby. “I’m so lucky to have family visit me.”
Downsizing isn’t easy, but her serviced apartment with stylish kitchenette, separate bedroom and beautiful en-suite is spacious, sunny and beautifully decorated.
And the bonus is there is no further capital outlay when moving to a serviced apartment from a townhouse within the village.
“I just think it’s pretty good!”
She especially enjoys the company of her neighbours and the closeness to all the village amenities. “I see people everyday and I feel more relaxed here.” She can easily pop down to morning and afternoon tea, the shop or happy hour and she loves musical events.
“I don’t do any housework, I don’t wash the towels or change bed – it’s luxurious! I recommend it.”
And Jenny takes heart in knowing if she ever needs it – help is at hand, day and night.
Jenny likes to keep fit and joins in the Ryman exclusive Triple A exercise classes twice a week and keeps agile with yoga classes.
“I make my own breakfast and each morning I get the newspaper and do the puzzles.”
Jenny has her main meal of the day in the village dining room. She enjoys having the choice of meals plus vegetarian, along with a choice of desserts. Later in the evening she makes herself a light meal in her apartment.
She is delighted to have the croquet court right outside her window. It was her sport and although she’s no longer able to play now, she enjoys watching the competition.
“The staff are excellent – really great! They are always happy and take good care of everyone.

“I don’t even worry about earthquakes here. There are people around here to care for us if things go wrong and look after the building.”
Jenny takes comfort in knowing Ryman is a large company and that gives her the security and reassurance they’ll be well looked after in the event of a disaster, or during the pandemic.
“The treats during lockdown were lovely and made you feel special. It means people care.
“This was the right decision for me. I feel more relaxed here.
“It’s perfect – but don’t leave it too long - enjoy it.”
