Miles of memories: Glynne and Eric’s passion for walking
Walking has always been a way of life for Glynne and Eric, who rarely miss a chance to lace up their shoes and head out. As residents of William Sanders village, they frequently clock up 12 kilometres in a day, enjoying the charm of their local neighbourhood. Their favourite routes feature stunning harbour and bay views and regular stops at their much-loved local cafés.
“There are so many beautiful walks nearby, It’s such a convenient area to explore,” says Eric.
Rebuilding confidence
While walking has long been a passion, Glynne says her confidence took a hit during the Covid-19 pandemic. Taking part in an inter-village Walking for Wellness challenge was a turning point, helping to rebuild her confidence.
“We honestly thought we’d never travel to the other side of the world again,” she explains. “But the wellness challenge gave us a real boost. We felt brighter, more energised, and more confident about taking on new challenges.”
A lock and leave lifestyle
After the Walking for Wellness challenge, the renewed outlook inspired Glynne and Eric to fulfil a long-held dream: walking the Monsal Trail in England’s Derbyshire Peak District.
“We finally made it to the other side of the world to walk the magnificent Monsal Trail,” says Glynne. “It was just incredible—old train tunnels, a beautiful viaduct, and a winding river. Everything about it was wonderful.”
The scenic trail stretches 13.5 kilometres and is a car-free path that welcomes walkers, runners, cyclists, and even horse riders. Stretching from Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale to Coombs Road in Bakewell, it’s known for its scenic hills, dales, and the iconic Headstone Viaduct. For Glynne and Eric, it was everything they had hoped for.
Their active lifestyle is made even easier by the lock-and-leave convenience of the village. With no worries about home maintenance or security, Glynne and Eric can focus on their passions.
“When we first visited, the lifestyle really stood out to us,” says Glynne. “Everyone was happy and always busy with something.” Now, they fully embrace the freedom that village living offers.
Whether they’re heading off on local walks or travelling further afield, they know their home will be safe and secure. “It’s given us so much flexibility,” says Eric. “We can pack up and leave whenever we want, which suits us perfectly.”
Fit for the future
Although they’ve already ticked the Monsal Trail off their list, Glynne and Eric are just getting started. Their walking wish list still includes iconic tracks such as New Zealand’s Milford Track, which has long been regarded as one of the world’s finest hikes.
“We’ve always talked about doing the Milford,” says Eric. “And now that we’re in the perfect position to go for it, we can’t wait to make it happen.”
From leisurely walks in their local neighbourhood to exciting trails around the world, Glynne and Eric prove that retirement is the perfect time for adventures. For them, it’s all about embracing the journey, whether near or far.
Explore New Zealand hiking trails:
Mauao / Mt Maunganui
30 to 45 minutes
A favourite spot for Glynn and Eric is Mt Maunganui, also known as Mauao, which means ‘caught by the dawn’. It takes less than an hour to walk to the summit where you can find a shady spot under a Pōhutukawa tree and enjoy a breathtaking view with the Pacific Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see.
"It’s a nice walk up to the top, and you get an incredible view from there,” says Eric.
Tongariro Crossing
6 to 8 hours
This challenging walk is located within Tongariro National Park in the heart of the North Island and has been described as the best single-day hike in New Zealand. Glynn and Eric had a wonderful time traversing the striking volcanic landscape which features stunning emerald coloured lakes, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents and magnificent views.
"We did that for my 70th birthday, and that was a highlight, it was fabulous,” says Glynne.
Golden Bay
10 minutes to several days, depending on the walk
Bordered by the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks, Golden Bay basks in some of the longest sunshine hours in New Zealand. A nature-lovers' paradise dotted with classic Kiwi small towns and artistic communities, there are plenty of walking options for all abilities.
The 10-minute Grove Scenic Reserve Walk is a magical spot which meanders through Rātā forest, limestone formations and includes a lookout over the surrounding area. For a slightly longer experience the 3.4km Wainui Falls Track is a flat stroll through lush native bush to a 20m waterfall cascading into an emerald-green pool. This walk can easily be done in about 1.5 hours. For the more ambitious, options include longer tramps such as the Kaituna and Rameka tracks.
Alternatively, hop over to nearby Abel Tasman National Park to walk the famous Abel Tasman Track, another item on Glynn and Eric’s wish list. Maybe you’ll even see them on the trail!
