Bev and John are no strangers to adventure. Whether it’s overseas escapades to the Great Wall of China, Vietnam, and Hong Kong, or exploring New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, this intrepid couple has seen their fair share of the world. But these days, they prefer to keep their travel plans closer to home—with their beloved Cavoodle, Skye, always in tow.

“We’ve done all the overseas trips we wanted to do,” says Bev. “We got Skye because we felt we’d seen all we needed to see. Now, it’s all about enjoying what’s on our doorstep.”

The couple, who call Ryman’s Northwood village home, enjoy the freedom that the village’s lock and leave lifestyle provides, as they set off in their motorhome.

“We’ll head off for six weeks, maybe two months—we don’t really have a set plan,” says John. “That’s the beauty of it. We can just go where we want, when we want, and come back when we feel like it.”

Freedom on the road

With their Northwood townhouse safe and sound, they never worry about what’s happening back home while they’re away. “Everything’s done for you at the village,” Bev adds. “We don’t have to stress about maintenance or security. When we return, the lawns are tidy, the garden looks great, and the windows are even cleaned - inside and out!”

The couple have embraced a relaxed, flexible approach to travel. “We just pack up the motorhome, load Skye in, and hit the road,” says Bev. “There’s no rush to be anywhere, and we love that. It’s all about enjoying the journey.”

Lock up and leave for summer

After spending Christmas with family, Bev, John, and Skye will head to Tahunanui Beach—Skye’s favourite spot. “We always go to Tahunanui after Christmas because of the dog beach. She absolutely loves it,” says Bev.

From there, it’s time to venture north. “We’re planning a trip to the North Island in the first few months of the year,” says John. “There are so many places we haven’t seen yet. We’ll go up the East Coast and come back down the West Coast - or maybe the other way round. That’s the beauty of it, we’ll decide as we go.”

Their wish list includes Greytown (“They’ve got nice gin there!”, says John.), the Bay of Islands, and Otaki, where John grew up. With stops to visit friends in Auckland and Langs Beach, and freedom camping along the way, they’re taking things at their own pace.

“We’ll wait until summer is over when it’s cooler up north for Skye,” adds Bev.

A South Island playground

When they’re not adventuring further afield, Bev and John love heading to their favourite places in the South Island. Central Otago is at the top of the list, with its lakes, cycle trails, and wide-open landscapes.

“We love Cromwell,” says Bev. “We’ve done the Lake Dunstan Track, and Skye came along for the ride too. She did the whole thing!”

Other favourites include the West Coast, Manapouri, and Blenheim. “The South Island is just so nice in summer,” says John. “The weather is so stable and beautiful, and you can go anywhere, do anything.”
